FAQ on Allergy

Q. What are the common symptoms of an allergy?
A. Symptoms could be : hay fever= rhinitis, breathlessness = asthma, itching skin= neurodermitis, diarrhea= colitis

Q. Is hay fever always related to hay and in case, do you have fever then?
A. The item hay fever is simply wrong. Especially in the UAE the hayfever is seldom caused by hay pollen, but mostly by dust that is blown out from the AC in a car or a house or that is produced by small invisible creatures that live in your mattress. Some patients suffer very much from the inflammation caused by these particles, so that they get fever.

Q. Why are more and more allergy cases among my relatives and friends?
A. The number of allergies is increasing: Allergologists estimate that in Germany one of four persons is affected and alone 35% among the children. Scientists don't know exactly why the number of allergies is increasing.

Environmental effects and exagurated hygiene in childhood could be a reason, or exposure to huge quantums of particles from fungi or mites.

Q. My child can not tolerate fresh milk and milk products. Is this an allergy?
A. In the medical sense you only have an allergy, if the immune system shows an unrelated overwhelming reaction to a normally harmless substance. Intolerance or malreactions as e.g. the lactose intolerance (if you cannot tolerate milk) could cause allergy alike symptoms , but they are based upon an enzyme lack, and not on an immune reaction.

Q. I have a penicillin allergy, my doctor said I could die in case of taking penicillin, what is the difference to hay fever?
A. Allergies can be separated into four categories : The first three categories include all allergies with immediate symptoms, Type 4 is not visible before 72 hours after contact with the allergene. Penicillin allergy as well as hay fever are instant reactions, the difference is, that you have penicillin in your circulation while pollens are only on the surface. A sting of a bee or a bite of an ant are able to cause the same reaction as penicillin does, if you were allergic against it, because they reach directly into your blood. If you swallow penicillin it is less risky than if you get an injection, but more risky than a contact of pollen or dust to your nose mucosa.

The intestinal mucosa has a huge surface which is more than a hundred times bigger than the nasal mucosa, that makes the reaction sometimes worse.

Q. What is wrong in the body of an allergy sufferer?
A. Certain proteins of our immune system are responsible for an allergic case, the immuneglobulines of type E (IgE). They are responsible for the instant reaction, you can always find higher concentrations of them in the blood of allergic people.

IgE-Antibodies sit on mastocytes and trigger the delivery of histamine and similar substances in case of contact with an allergene, and finally these substances are causing the allergy symptoms .

Q. Is the allergy heritable?
A. Yes, the affinity to allergic reactions seems to have a heritable component : Children with parents, that are allergy sufferers, have a higher probability to become allergic too. A higher IgE level in the blood( see answer no.6) also increases the risk. Then it depends on what happens in the life. If there have been long term infections of the nose or the bronchi, if there has been an extreme disposition to allergenes like mites dust, pollen, fungi,etc..., if there has been stress factors that could cause a certain intestine reaction or skin reaction.

Q. How can I know against what I am allergic?
A. The identification of the "culprit" of an allergic reaction is in many cases like a puzzle:

You can unfragment only piece by piece the picture of the allergene. Several tests can be preformed to that end.

Q. What is the best treatment of an allergy?
A. The most effective therapy of an allergy, the avoidance of the contact with the allergene is not always implementable. Another approach is the hyposensisitivitation therapy and/or treatment of the symptoms with medical drugs like antihistaminic or steroid pills, drops, syrups or sprays.

In relation to the test result he plans with each patient an individual therapy. This could also be a combination of medical and surgical therapy
