A graduate of the American University of Beirut, Dr. Fakih completed residencies at that university’s medical center, as well as Vanderbilt University’s Hospital in Tennessee. He completed two fellowships in reproductive endocrinology and infertility - one at Yale University, and another at the Medical Center of South Carolina.

Infertility Treatment Options If pregnancy through the usual method is not possible, infertility treatment is an option. In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the commonly used term for all infertility programs. IVF was first developed some 27 years ago, and new advances in medicine have since resulted in the adoption of a newer technique called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The old IVF technique involves fertilization of the egg in a glass dish in a laboratory, instead of fertilization in woman's fallopian tube. The wife's eggs are mixed with the husband's sperm in the glass dish. One or more embryos produced by this process are transferred to the woman's uterus and with luck, and God's will, one of these embryos implants itself , a normal pregnancy follows and the woman gives birth to a healthy child. The ICSI technique involves injecting sperm directly into the eggs. The fertilization rate using this technique is much higher, and it is offered at our Center to maximize the fertilization success rate for our patients. Who is a Candidate for IVF Treatment? A) Couples who have been trying to conceive by normal intercourse for one or more years without success, and medical examinations fail to find any cause of infertility; B) Advanced age of the wife, with ovulation difficulties; C) Previous inflammation of the tube causing obstruction (tubal disease with occlusion); D) The husband's infertility, with low sperm count, inadequate mobility or deformity.
