Earlier this year, Dr. William D. Murrell, Jr. was named Chief Science Officer for Emirates Hospitals & Clinics to lead the Regenerative Medicine Programs within the group. He is also Consultant Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.
Orthopaedics is a medical specialty that treats the musculoskeletal system. This may include bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves.
Many people suffer from chronic pain related to joint and tissue diseases. In the Gulf region, it is likely that up to 20% of the population will experience an orthopaedic injury or disease that can limit productivity and increase emotional distress for the patient.
“At Emirates Hospitals & Clinics, I am surrounded by experts who are highly trained and complement each other’s knowledge and skills,” said Dr. William D. Murrell, Jr. “We are fortunate to practice in an environment where we can transform the lives of our patients as we work together to achieve complete wellness and wholeness. We want people to have miraculous experiences that result in seeing themselves as healthy and vital and empowered to live pain free and full lives.”
The Regenerative Medicine Programs at Emirates Integra Medical & Surgical Centre, and Emirates Hospitals & Clinics
When it comes to conservative, non-operative procedures, Dr. William D. Murrell, Jr. leads the Regenerative Medicine Programs that includes treatment of elbow, shoulder, hip/pelvis, knee, and ankle disorders with leading, evidence-based techniques many of which are being applied to every area of medicine.
“Regenerative medicine continues to evolve,” said Dr. Murrell, Jr. “Using stem cells and other biological agents, this treatment helps the body heal itself. From reconstructing ligaments to transplanted products that can replace damaged knee cartilage, regenerative medicine can improve a patient’s quality of life.”
Additional treatments are platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Prolotherapy. PRP, administered through injections, produces faster healing in soft tissue and joints. It is ideal for treating osteoarthritis, and other injuries caused by sports injuries.
Prolotherapy is another injection treatment. Unlike PRP and stem cells, prolotherapy doesn’t contain any cellular elements in its solution. Prolotherapy has shown positive results for patients with chronic back pain, tendonitis, and knee osteoarthritis.

● Knees: Cartilage repair surgery of the knee, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscal and cartilage transplantation
